Friday, March 2, 2012 "Canadians need an Aboriginal History Lesson"
![Picture](/uploads/9/1/2/0/9120829/2964941.jpg?450)
I was speaking to a few students in my American History class on Friday about the (mis)treatment of North American Aboriginal groups during the settlement of the United States. One stated that our "Canadian" Aboriginal groups had "nothing to complain about" as "they were not treated as poorly as their "American" counterparts". I was a bit dumbfounded by the conviction this student had and this conversation left me thinking about how much the average Canadian secondary high school student actually knows about the history (and questionable present and future) of our First Nations groups. It was only in university that I learned about the biological warfare that was used by European settlers to help conquer Aboriginal communities. The knowledge that smallpox infected blankets and goods were knowingly given to First Nations groups as trade-able items still perturbs me. As a result, I attach an article from the Globe and Mail, February 29 2012 in the hopes that some of you will read it and possibly ponder your own knowledge of Aboriginal History. What WERE you told? What WEREN'T you told? WHY? What does the future hold for our First Nation communities?

Bicentennial of the War of 1812 - worth $28 million?
![Picture](/uploads/9/1/2/0/9120829/3069491.jpg)
In my American History class we are going to be having a debate this week about the Canadian government's decision to fund around $28 million to celebrate the bicentenial of the War of 1812 with our closest neighbours, and current allies, the United States of America. Regardless of your course of study, be it Canadian History, Civics or American History, I think it is worthwhile to formulate some questions of your own as to whether you agree or disagree with such a celebration, and the amount of funding going to support it.

Historian Niall Ferguson believes the nations of the West really broke away from the pack when they adopted what he calls six killer apps: competition, science, the rule of law, consumerism, modern medicine, and the work ethic. That's what made them rich and powerful and able to boss around everybody else.

For all my WWII buffs who are interested in how technology can help the past "come alive," here is a link to an article about a Twitter account established by a 24 year old Oxford University History Graduate, Alwyn Collinson, who is recreating the events of the Second World War in 140 characters or less every day. It is a fascinating project. (Special thanks to Ms. Brandon for the heads up!)
