Prompting questions:
Click here for PERSUASION MAP to draft your essay (just remember no antithesis has been considered in this map), or use this DRAFT OUTLINE TEMPLATE.
TOPIC #1 – FRENCH REVOLUTION –AN ASSESSMENT IN 1800; SUCCESS OR FAILURE?
Prompting questions:
- Was the French Revolution a success or failure by the turn of the century? Could it possibly be classified as both? How might perspectives change depending upon status and location of a citizen? What factors should be considered to determine its success?
- Who were the key contributors to mobilizing the revolution? What were the original objectives of the revolutionists? Were these objectives achieved by 1800?
- How did the execution of Bourbon monarch Louis XVI, and his wife Marie Antoinette, impact the revolution and its ideals?
- In which ways did the new republic of France provide inspiration (and frustration) globally? Why is Saint Domingue significant in evaluating the expansion of France’s revolutionary ideals?
- How did the Jacobins, and eventually individuals such as Marat, Robespierre and Napoleon come to power? How was their ascent into the public eye unique from the opportunities during the Ancien Regime?
- What was the Reign of Terror? Was it necessary to create the new republic and the National Convention? Why was there a Thermidorian Reaction?
- Did the coup d’Etat in 1799 reflect the success or failure of the revolution?
TOPIC #2 – THE FRENCH REVOLUTION IMPROVED THE STATUS OF WOMEN; MYTH OR REALITY?
Prompting questions:
- What was the status of French/European women and their roles within the family prior to 1789?
- How influential were women’s writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft and Olympe de Gouges (Declaration of the Rights of Women)?
- How were actions of men, such as Marquis de Condorcet, helpful to the women’s cause?
- In “A Vindication of the Rights of Women,” what critiques and suggestions did Mary Wollstonecraft have to improve the status of women? How historically significant was this essay at the time?
- How did some women, such as Catherine the Great of Russia, defy the norms of their day in their positions of power and relationships within a patriarchal society?
- How did the revolution of 1789 provide a climate of political activism for female participants?
- Was status (i.e. nobility, peasantry, bourgeoisie) a benefit to women during the revolutionary years?
- How might the revolution, and ensuing Reign of Terror, have united or isolated women and men?
- Comment of the symbolism of “Liberty” as a woman.
- How did Napoleon’s rule (Civil Code) impact the revolutionary gains or losses?
- How might some modern women argue that there are many similar issues addressed by Wollstonecraft that still prevail in the world today? Consider “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All” by Anne-Marie Slaughter (2012)
TOPIC #3 – NAPOLEON I, EMPEROR OF FRANCE – HERO OR TYRANT?
Prompting questions:
- Was Napoleon a hero or a tyrant? Are these terms mutually exclusive? Is it possible that a hero could be a tyrant or a tyrant a hero?
- Did Napoleon do more to preserve the legacy of the French Revolution or to destroy it?
- Although Napoleon assumed dictatorial powers, he became First Consul as well as Emperor with the enthusiasm and approval of the French people. Should this affect how we judge him in the role of "tyrant"?
- Must we assume that all conquerors throughout history are villains? When, if ever, can a conqueror be hero?
- Did Napoleon conquer others for a higher purpose, or only for his own glory?
- Should a leader's personal and romantic life be factored into the assessment of hero or tyrant, and if so why or why not?
